A simple watch with casual clothes

Choose a watch that sits comfortably under the sleeves you wear most.

Look at thickness as well as diameter

A watch can have a modest face and still feel bulky because of its case thickness. Try it with a shirt cuff and the knitwear you commonly wear. If the cuff repeatedly catches on the case, changing the strap will not necessarily solve the problem. The watch needs to fit the space around it as well as the wrist beneath it.

Check the way the lugs extend beyond the case. A shape that reaches across the wrist differently can feel larger than its stated diameter suggests. Product measurements are a useful comparison, not a substitute for looking and moving. Turn your wrist, rest it on a table and bend your hand before deciding whether the proportions suit you.

Let the strap change the emphasis

A leather strap adds a different texture from a metal bracelet or woven strap. It does not need to match a belt exactly. With casual clothes, a similar depth of colour can be enough, or a deliberate contrast may be more interesting. Begin with the strap you find comfortable rather than assembling an accessory set around a photograph.

Fasten the watch so it stays where you want it without digging in. Fit can vary during the day, and a bracelet may need an adjustment that a simple buckle strap does not. If you are between available settings, ask about adjustment options before buying. A watch that slides into your hand whenever you reach forward will quickly become distracting.

Use the dial as part of the outfit

A quiet dial can accompany a patterned shirt without adding another dense area of detail. A colourful dial may be the only bright note in an otherwise neutral outfit. Neither approach requires an expensive object. Decide whether the watch is primarily something you use to read the time or a detail you enjoy seeing, and choose accordingly.

Do not infer water resistance or suitability for swimming from a sporty appearance. Check the manufacturer's stated limits and operating instructions for the exact model. The same caution applies to strap care: materials that look similar may need different treatment. Avoid making a purchase around a performance claim that has not been verified.

For an everyday wardrobe, one watch you enjoy wearing can be sufficient. You do not need separate dress, weekend and travel watches unless your preferences or activities create that need. Try the watch with several existing outfits before deciding that an additional one is missing.
