Suede loafers with and without socks

Fit the shoe for the way you intend to wear it, including what sits between foot and lining.

Brown suede loafers with bare ankles

Start with the heel

A loafer has no laces to adjust around the foot. Before considering its colour or the trouser above it, walk in it and notice the heel. Some movement can occur, but a shoe that repeatedly slips off is not made suitable by adding a decorative sock. Equally, a tight instep should not be dismissed as a problem that will certainly disappear.

Try both shoes rather than judging the pair from one foot. Stand, turn and take several ordinary steps. If the retailer allows an indoor trial at home, use a clean surface and follow the return conditions. You are checking whether your foot remains comfortably located, not trying to force a favourite-looking shoe into the wrong size.

Three different arrangements

Visible socks make loafers easier to carry into cooler weather. A fine sock gives a different fit from a thick ribbed one, so bring the type you expect to use. Dark socks close to the trouser colour create continuity. A contrasting pair can be intentional too, but it becomes a prominent part of the outfit when you sit.

No-show socks leave the ankle visually clear while keeping a fabric layer inside the shoe. Check that the edge does not appear above the low opening and that the heel stays in place. A sock that slides under the foot is a poor solution even if it looks invisible for the first minute in front of a mirror.

Wearing loafers directly against bare feet is a separate choice, not a requirement for a summer look. Consider personal comfort, the lining and how you will maintain the shoes. If direct contact becomes uncomfortable, change the arrangement rather than treating discomfort as the price of a particular style. The outside appearance can remain similar with well-fitting hidden socks.

Give suede room in the outfit

Suede brings a matte texture that works with cotton trousers, relaxed wool trousers and many jeans. A very narrow hem can make a loafer look unexpectedly long; a heavy puddle of cloth can conceal it. Look at the junction while standing naturally, then while walking. Do not shorten every trouser simply because one pair is being worn in warm weather.

After wearing the shoes, let them rest in a ventilated place away from direct heat. Follow the maker's instructions for brushing and products, since finishes vary. You do not need to turn every outing into a cleaning project, but allowing dirt and moisture to accumulate makes the next wear less pleasant.
