An olive overshirt with ecru trousers
A light trouser changes the mood of workwear without removing its useful simplicity.

Begin with the lightest piece
Ecru trousers are not simply white trousers under another name. Their warmer, less stark appearance can sit comfortably beside muted olive, especially when both fabrics have a matte surface. Put the trousers on in daylight and check the pocket bags and underwear underneath. If they show more than you want, solve that before deciding which overshirt looks best.
A straight or gently tapered leg gives this combination an easy outline. Very slim pale trousers can make the heavier overshirt seem disproportionately large. The waist should be comfortable without a tightly cinched belt, since the pale cloth makes bunching around the fly particularly noticeable. Keep the pockets lightly loaded so the front remains calm.
Open or closed changes the shape
Worn open, the overshirt frames whatever is underneath. A white, cream or muted grey T-shirt keeps that centre uncomplicated. Check the three pale shades together rather than assuming they must match exactly. A little separation between the shirt and trousers often looks more natural than an unsuccessful attempt at one continuous cream colour.
Buttoning the overshirt makes it the main top. Leave enough room for sitting and reaching, and notice whether the bottom edge catches at the hips. If it only hangs well with the lowest buttons undone, that may be a styling choice, but it can also indicate that the cut is too narrow. Try the next size without assuming larger will solve every dimension.
Give the shoes a clear role
Dark brown shoes ground the light trousers, while pale trainers keep the outfit airy. A heavy boot can suit a substantial overshirt, but the trouser opening needs to fit over it without gathering. Avoid choosing shoes only by colour; a sleek formal pair may feel less connected to large patch pockets than a simpler rounded design.
For a cooler day, add a navy coat rather than another olive layer that almost matches. On a warmer day, push or fold the sleeves only as far as they stay comfortably. The outfit already has a contrast between light and dark, so extra accessories are optional. A canvas bag or a plain leather belt can be enough; neither needs to become a second focal point.
