A poolside bag with only the essentials

Separate wet items from dry ones and choose the bag for the route to the pool, not just the lounger.

A striped poolside bag with towels and essentials

The right poolside bag depends on what the venue already provides. A hotel towel, locker and changing room reduce what you need to carry; an outdoor pool without those facilities changes the list. Check before packing. A large bag is not automatically more prepared if half its contents remain unused and the important things are difficult to reach.

Lay out the actual essentials: swimwear, the clothes needed afterwards, a towel if required, footwear appropriate to the venue and whatever personal items you normally use. Add keys, a payment method and any entry information. Keep the list tied to this visit rather than turning it into an all-purpose holiday packing list.

Plan the return journey while everything is dry

Wet swimwear needs somewhere to go after the visit. A separate washable pouch or other suitable container can keep it away from dry clothing during the journey. Empty it afterwards and follow the garments' care instructions rather than leaving damp items enclosed in the bag. The container is a temporary separation, not a storage plan.

A towel can occupy far more space after use than it did when neatly folded at home. Allow room for that change. If you rely on rolling every item into an exact arrangement to close the bag, the return trip may become frustrating. A little spare capacity is often more useful than several tiny compartments.

Consider the bag's contact with the surroundings

The bag may sit on a wet bench, sandy ground or a changing-room floor. Choose a material and base you can handle according to their cleaning instructions. Do not assume a canvas tote is waterproof or that a zip makes any pouch suitable for submersion. If water protection is important for electronics, use a product with the specific protection you need and follow its limitations.

A reachable small pocket is convenient for an entry card, but avoid treating it as secure storage by itself. Use lockers or the venue's arrangements when appropriate. Valuable items that you do not need at the pool are often simpler to leave elsewhere rather than finding increasingly elaborate ways to carry them.

Make it comfortable outside the pool area

Try the bag with the clothing you will wear on the way there. A short handle can be awkward over a jacket, while a long loose strap may trail when placed down. If walking or using public transport, check that the packed bag does not repeatedly hit your leg.

After one visit, note what was missing and what never left the bag. Adjust the next packing list from that evidence. The aim is a bag that supports a specific outing, not one filled to demonstrate that every possible situation has been imagined.
